Ceiba’s High School Summer Cycles emphasize the power and impact of community service learning while enjoying all the rich beauty, warmth, and adventure of Guatemala. You have the choice of one of Ceiba’s fantastic project partners and, rather than the online component of the longer-term program, you are immersed into local culture and history with coordinated, unique trips and activities that take you from the ancient Maya to present-day Guatemala. Along with a very real, authentic immersion in Spanish language, global citizenship, and teamwork, these are five weeks that will change your life forever!
For three days per week for the length of your Summer program, you serve with your chosen community service project (link projects). Through your sustained service work, you become a member of the community and share your learning with the folks that you regularly interact with throughout your five weeks.
Guatemala Summer Adventure
Guatemala is a relatively small country with an absolutely fantastic number of beautiful and unique destinations packed into its borders. Your Summer program includes a number Ceiba-organized multi-day trips outside of Antigua. Just a few of the activities you have to look forward to are the caldera Lake Atitlan, a three-day trek through the indigenous Alaska highlands, climbing pyramids in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, visiting Livingston to experience the Caribbean Garifuna culture, and a few days at the beach on the Pacific coast. All trips are with Ceiba’s guides and every consideration is given to providing a safe, unforgettable experience that introduces you to an amazing country while also providing a broadened perspective to apply to your community service work.
Accommodation and Meals
Ceiba’s comfortable and safe student house is located in the tranquil town of San Juan del Obispo, just outside of Antigua on the side of Volcan Agua. You are going to be working hard with your community service projects and taking on all kinds of adventures further out from Antigua, and we want you to have a home that you can truly call your own. All students live in the student house, along with a rotation of Ceiba staff, and have access to laptops and internet, entertainment areas, a gorgeous terrace with spectacular views of the Antigua valley, and your meals are prepared fresh by Ceiba’s own personal cook.
Spanish Language Instruction
Ceiba’s Spanish curriculum was developed by a local Guatemalan teacher to include the ‘nuts and bolts’ language necessities like grammar but also focuses on the ‘real Spanish’, that which you need to have conversations and understand Antigueño slang and expressions.
In addition to using Spanish for many hours while with your community projects and your Ceiba curriculum, you have the chance to use your Spanish on the fantastic adventures around Guatemala. Learning in context and through experience gives you a unique opportunity to develop your Spanish that moves far beyond the classroom into the real world.
